What is a Pet Wellness Exam?

A pet wellness exam is an extensive examination that provides your pet with a complete assessment of their physical and mental health. It’s very similar to a physical examination for humans.

Your pet’s veterinarian will check all of the major body systems such as cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, and more to ensure they are functioning properly.

They’ll also perform a behavioral analysis so we can be sure there aren’t any obvious signs of psychological or emotional problems which could lead to illness.

The Importance of Pet Wellness Exams

Pet wellness exams are important because it gives pet owners the opportunity to act early if there is something wrong.

If your pet’s veterinarian finds something during a pet wellness exam they can treat them before it becomes worse and more difficult to manage.

This is especially true for pets with chronic illnesses like diabetes or heart disease, but pet wellness exams are also crucial for young healthy animals too.

What a Pet Wellness Exam Consists Of

If you’re considering requesting a pet wellness exam for your furry loved one, it’s important that you know what this test entails.

The goal of any pet examination is to test every aspect of the animal’s body, such as:

General Condition

This assessment helps pet owners determine if their pet is in good health and has the energy to play. General Nutrition: The veterinarian will weigh your pet, review diet history, and make recommendations for nutritional needs based on age, weight, activity level, etc.

Oral Health

Pets who eat high-quality food usually have better oral hygiene which means they don’t need as much dental work done.

Eyesight & Hearing

We’ll check eyesight by looking into each eye with a special light called an ophthalmoscope while we use a tuning fork to test hearing sensitivity at certain frequencies of sound.

Animal Communication

We’ll ask pet owners to describe their pet’s normal behavior and use that as a guide for conducting the exam.

Neck Area

We’ll check lymph nodes, thyroid glands, and other neck structures during this part of the pet wellness examination.

Chest & Lungs

We will listen to breathing sounds with our stethoscope and feel heart rate by palpation (touching) over different parts of the chest area.

Heart Rate & Pulse Quality

This assessment helps us determine if there is an irregular heartbeat which could be an indicator of underlying diseases such as congenital problems or infections like Lyme Disease.

Abdomen/GI Tract Vitals

We will listen to breathing sounds with our stethoscope and feel heart rate by palpation (touching) over different parts of the chest area.

Heart Rate & Pulse Quality

This assessment helps us determine if there is an irregular heartbeat which could be an indicator of underlying diseases such as congenital problems or infections like Lyme Disease.

Abdomen/GI Tract Vitals

We will listen to intestinal sounds and palpate (touch) the pet’s belly in order to check for abnormalities.

Reproductive Organs

We’ll examine reproductive organs including urinary, testicles, ovaries, uterus, etc. so we can determine the animal is healthy if they are sexually mature or not yet of breeding age if necessary.

Urinary System

This assessment helps us see how well your pet’s kidneys are functioning which determines their overall health status.
We may perform a urinalysis during this part of our pet wellness exam as well which involves collecting urine samples that get tested at an outside lab for any potential problems with specific
organ systems that could cause illness down the road.
